Disney has confirmed that “The Simpsons” will be available to stream in the UK when Disney+ launches on March 24th.
A Sky representative tells The Verge that the series will remain a Sky co-exclusive for new seasons and include the back catalogue. However, back seasons will also be shared with Disney+. Disney subsequently confirmed on Twitter that more than 600 episodes of the 670 episodes produced will be available to stream on their new service.
While Disney owns the full rights to stream “The Simpsons” in the United States, those rights don’t extend overseas. In Australia for example where Disney+ has been active since November, they don’t have the most recent season or two.
The bigger remaining question though in regards to “The Simpsons,” namely when the Mouse House will fix the joke-destroying aspect ratio issue, remains unclear. Disney has promised it will offer the first nineteen seasons in the show’s original 4:3 aspect ratio, rather than the cropped 16:9 it currently uses, but haven’t set a date for it as yet.
