Out doing “The Way Back” promotion, Ben Affleck has given an update on the sequel to the underrated “The Accountant,” indicating that the action thriller’s follow-up could instead be a TV series.
“Warrior” helmer Gavin O’Connor directed the 2016 film in which Affleck starred as Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant who uncooks the books for various clients whilst also moonlighting as a hitman. As the Treasury Department closes in on his activities, the body count starts to rise.
Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, and John Lithgow co-starred and the film earned $155.2 million at the worldwide box office, very solid for what was a cost-effective thriller. Affleck tells Collider he’d be “thrilled to work with Gavin again and do that again” and that the first film “was a lot of fun. It was an interesting twist on the genre and I’d love to do it”. How much actual progress has been made though?
“We’ve talked about it. There seems to be a debate whether or not to do a TV series version of it. The scriptwriter [Bill Dubuque] has become quite successful and busy, so he’s off doing his thing. And somebody said to me, ‘Well if we could find a script that we could retrofit and make into a sequel’. But that’s sort of tricky because the personality of the character is so specific, that doesn’t really work to just say, ‘Well, we used call this script Action Movie Shootout, and now we’re going to call it ‘The Accountant 2”.”
Affleck jokes that if they want to produce a TV show version of it and “I get some royalties, well that’s great, too.” The Affleck-led sports drama “The Way Back” opens in cinemas March 6th.
