“NYPD Blue,” “Penny” Sequel Series Set Leads

Daniel Zovatto (“Here and Now,” “Don’t Breathe”) has reportedly scored the lead role in Showtime’s new sequel series “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” which hails from creator, writer and executive producer John Logan.

A spiritual descendant of the Victorian-era London original series, the next chapter follows new characters and storylines in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.

Zovatto will play Tiago, the LAPD’s first Mexican-American detective who grapples with racism, childhood trauma, and faith issues.

That’s not the only series to cast its lead today though as the pilot for the “NYPD Blue” follow-up at ABC has cast newcomer Fabien Frankel in the lead role of Theo Sipowicz.

Theo is the son of Andy Sipowicz (the late Dennis Franz) and, like his father, he’s a hard-drinking, hard-headed, and quick-witted cop who is trying to earn his detective shield whilst investigating his father’s murder. Frankel joins previously announced cast members Alona Tal, Bill Brochtrup and Kim Delaney.
