“Aquaman” ruled the seas again over the Christmas holiday, the underwater DC superhero epic generated $22 million on Tuesday for a five-day haul of $105 million – one of the best non-“Star Wars” Christmas Day hauls to date.
The film has now grossed over $550 million worldwide and prognosticators are suggesting the film could hit the $1 billion mark by the time it closes out its run.
“Mary Poppins Returns” came in second with $11.6 million on the day and has amassed $50 million since it launched a week ago. “Bumblebee” was third with $8.9 million and a five-day total of $34.27 million.
“Holmes & Watson” opened in fourth with $6.4 million and is expected to make $18-20 million by end of Sunday. Closing things out in fifth was “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” with $5.5 million on Tuesday and a domestic haul so far of $73.5 million.
The only other major opener besides ‘Holmes’ was “Vice” which nabbed $4.7 million, that’s a lot better than “Welcome to Marwen” which scored just $1 million this holiday and so far has nabbed a U.S. domestic total haul of $4 million.
In limited release, “On the Basis of Sex” took in a $13,000 per screen average while “Destroyer” made $10,246 per screen.
