Netflix has acquired global rights to Steven Soderbergh’s sports-themed feature “High Flying Bird,” which marks his first collaboration with the streaming giant.
The anticipated drama, penned by “Moonlight” writer Tarell Alvin McCraney, is set during a pro basketball lockout and follows a sports agent (Andre Holland) who pitches a rookie basketball client (Melvin Gregg) an intriguing and controversial business proposition
Zazie Beetz, Kyle MacLachlan, Bill Duke, Zachary Quinto and Sonja Sohn co-star. Joseph Malloch is producing the film which was shot on an iPhone.
Soderbergh said in a statement this is the beginning of a relationship with Netflix. Whether that will include his high-profile Panama Papers movie “The Laundromat” currently in the works is unclear.
Netflix is planning a 2019 global release for “High Flying Bird”.
