One of the more ridiculous social media controversies this year has been discovered by British tabloid The Telegraph which has found people complaining about a bit of accuracy regarding Patty Jenkins’ upcoming “Wonder Woman” film.
What’s wrong? Gal Gadot’s armpits. The most recent trailer for the film includes a brief shot of the superheroinne which appears to show her armpits have been digitally bleached – the pits not only lacking hair but are noticeably paler than the rest of her body.
A post-production flaw perhaps, but the debate has also raged over whether Wonder Woman, a fictitious character, would shave her armpits at all as she comes from a mythical island where mainstream beauty standards aren’t applicable – female underarm shaving didn’t begin until 1915 and didn’t catch on in Europe until the 1940s.
Gadot herself has responded to the unfair criticisms over her appearance in the past. At one time she told Ynet (via EW):
“They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small. After they asked me here, in Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny – they said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick – I can take anything. It’s just empty talk. I understand that part of what I’m doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire. When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amuses me. The true Amazons had one boob so it wouldn’t bother them in their archery. So it’s not going to be like real Amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can’t.”
A new report at ComicBook also confirms a plot point seen in the recent trailer. Jenkins has confirmed that the bracelet energy blast doesn’t come from the bracelets themselves but rather from within Diana and channeled through them.
“Wonder Woman” is slated to open in cinemas on June 2nd.
