Michelle Rodriguez has indicated that she may depart the “Fast and the Furious” franchise if the series doesn’t shape up in regards to its portrayal of women.
In a posting on Instagram today by Rodriguez, who plays Letty Ortiz in the film series, the actress indicated she may not appear in the ninth film unless creatively there’s a slight adjustment:
“F8 is out digitally today. I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise. It’s been a good ride & Im grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years… One Love.”
The comment follows on from remarks she gave to EW recently about how, despite having worked alongside actress Jordana Brewster over seven of the films, the pair have almost never shared dialogue in scenes together despite Rodriguez playing the partner of Brewster’s brother Dom (Vin Diesel):
“I’ve been making movies with Jordana, who plays the sister of Dom Toretto, for 16 years and I can count on one hand how many lines I’ve had to her. I think that’s pathetic and it’s lack of creativity.”
The films have always focused on male characters and while they’re have been some strong female roles from the likes of those two along with Gal Gadot and Elsa Pataky, the women of this series have generally been given the short end of the stick.
