Netflix has acquired the live-action feature film rights to the “Carmen Sandiego” video game and animated series franchise and has attached “Jane the Virgin” and “Annihilation” actress Gina Rodriguez to star as the title character in a new feature.
The project comes separate to and on top of a new “Carmen Sandiego” animated series for 2019 with Rodriguez voicing the title character. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, who owns the franchise, will also publish a line of books featuring Carmen to launch in 2019.
The movie will be a standalone Carmen adventure that will embrace the beloved property, and no writer or director is yet attached. Rodriguez will also produce the film through her I Can and I Will production banner alongside Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser.
