New Line’s upcoming new film adaptation of the “Mortal Kombat” video game franchise is moving forward and is set to begin shooting in South Australia later this year.
Today, the film’s most recent writer Greg Russo has confirmed that the new movie will not only have an R-rating, but will include the one thing the game is most famous for but which didn’t make the previous films – fatalities. Russo says on Twitter:
“Since it’s already been stated by other members of the team, I’m gonna put this one to bed. MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones) You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!! ;)”
In the game, fatalities are the ‘finishing move’ of a fight and are made famous for being incredibly brutal – from ripping faces off to bi-secting people where they stand to ripping heads and spinal columns off.
Noted commercials helmer Simon McQuoid is set to direct the James Wan-produced feature which so far has only cast Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. The new “Mortal Kombat” opens March 5th 2021.
