“Monkey” Returns With Rebooted Netflix Series

See-Saw Films and Jump Film & TV have teamed to produce the new live-action TV series “The Legend of Monkey” for ABC, TVNZ and Netflix.

Children of the 1980s in the UK, Australia and around the world will recall the classic 1978 Japanese TV series “Monkey” – an adaptation of 16th century Chinese fable “Journey to the West” which has since been adapted several times into films, games and more

This new New Zealand-Australian co-production is a ten episode half-hour series version which follows a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey as they attempt to bring an end to a demonic reign of chaos and restore balance to their world.

Cast includes Chai Hansen as Monkey, Luciane Buchanan as Tripitaka, Josh Thomson as Pigsy and Emile Cocquerel as Sandy. Writers include Jacquelin Perske (“Spirited”), Craig Irvin (“Nowhere Boys”) and Samantha Strauss (“Dance Academy”). Gerard Johnstone (“Housebound”) is the lead director on the project and filming is underway in New Zealand.

Series is being produced for ABC, TVNZ and Netflix and is an official New Zealand-Australian co-production with principal investment from Screen Australia, in association with Screen NSW, Fulcrum Media Finance and the New Zealand Screen Production Grant.
