Jake McDorman (“Murphy Brown”) and Joe Dempsie (“Game of Thrones”) are set to join “Suits” alum Patrick J. Adams in the new event series adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s iconic 1979 novel “The Right Stuff” for National Geographic.
The story follows NASA’s Project Mercury, which ignited a space race with the Soviets and made instant celebrities of the Mercury Seven, a group of military test pilots.
McDorman will play the ‘furiously competitive’ Alan Shepard, who is one of the best test pilots in Navy history. Dempsie will portray Lt. Gordon Cooper, the youngest of the Mercury Seven who was recruited to everyone’s surprise.
The series also stars Aaron Staton (“Mad Men”) as Wally Schirra, James Lafferty (“One Tree Hill”) as Scott Carpenter, Micah Stock (“Bonding”) as Deke Slayton, and Michael Trotter (“Underground”) as Gus Grissom. Adams will star as John Glenn.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson will executive produce and Mark Lafferty is showrunner on the series which premieres sometime in 2020.
