Former “Hornblower” and “Fantastic Four” star Ioan Gruffudd has scored two new projects.
First up, the actor will join Mel Gibson and Sean Penn in “The Professor and the Madman” about 19th century professor James Murray (Gibson) who started to compile the Oxford English Dictionary.
Gruffudd will play the role of Henry Bradley, a particular and demanding philologist who helps Murray assemble words for the compilation. Bradley’s attention to detail is exhausting but proves to be a great asset in the assembly of the dictionary.
Penn plays Dr. W.C. Minor who contributed thousands of entries to the ambitious literary project but who was also an inmate at an insane asylum.
Gruffudd has also signed on for the six-part mini-series “Liar” at SundanceTV and ITV. He will join Joanne Froggatt (“Downton Abbey”) on the event series created by “The Missing” producers Harry and Jack Williams.
Froggatt will play Laura, a smart and dedicated teacher unsure about getting back into the dating scene. Gruffudd is set as Andrew, a renowned surgeon whose son is a student at Laura’s school.
An initial attraction leads to a date, but neither fully realizes the far-reaching consequences that their meeting will have on each other or their families.
