Amazon Studios is developing the darkly comic animated series “The Hospital” which Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph’s Animal Pictures will produce. Cirocco Dunlap created the series about two brilliant female alien doctors who specialize in rare sci-fi illnesses. When one defies protocol, she contracts a disease from another dimension and they must find a cure before the universe is destroyed.
The streaming giant has also issued a two-season order for “Fairfax,” an animated series which follows four middle school best friends on a never-ending quest for clout on L.A.’s titular Fairfax Avenue – the ‘pulsing heart of hypebeast culture’. Matt Hausfater, Aaron Buchsbaum, and Teddy Riley created the series with studio Titmouse (“Big Mouth”) handling the animation for the two sets of eight half-hour episodes.
Freeform has begun development of the one-hour black comedy neo-noir series “LA Ultra” from producer Dennis Saldua (“The Passage”) and creator Liz Heldens. The story centers on the mysterious disappearance of an actress and the unlikely Angelenos who have the best chance of finding her… her stand-in and the set cop. Their chaotic investigation takes the duo deep into the surreal and seedy LA, as they begin to uncover a dark conspiracy.
