Tom Holland reprises his role of Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” – a full five years after he last graced screens in the role – and says he’s well aware he won’t play Spider-Man forever.
Some fans have hoped this film will be the start of a whole new ‘trilogy’ of films, a more grounded one that eschews Tony Stark’s gadgets and mentorship in favour of Holland’s Peter just being able to be himself.
But the actor, who turns 30 on Monday, says in a new interview with Empire, that he’s already thinking ahead to be a part of the inevitable transition to another web slinger and wants to be there for them in a mentor capacity:
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter. Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
In his return to the role, Holland shared that he had some ideas and was invited into the writers’ room and said he and producers would “meet once every two weeks to pitch ideas and discuss our ambitions and what we wanted to try and do.”
That resulted in him coming up with a pitch that loosely formed the basis of the story we got:
“My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty’. What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing? ‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio, which was immediately shot down. But they liked the kernel of the idea, and it grew into what we have in the movie now.”
Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, Mark Ruffalo and Keith David star in the film which opens in cinemas on July 31st. The comments come as a new 2min 30sec trailer for the film has been rated and should be released imminently – most likely next week with copies attached to “Masters of the Universe” in cinemas next Friday.
