The “Stargate” revival series ordered at Amazon MGM Studios last November has been scrapped, reports Variety.
Martin Gero, a writer on “Stargate SG-1” and “Stargate Atlantis,” was set as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the new series.
However, the trade indicates Amazon executives were concerned Gero’s take would not have “broad appeal” beyond the franchise’s existing fanbase.
No story specifics were ever released for Gero’s take so it’s not clear how it incorporated the existing lore of the franchise.
Despite the scrapping, Amazon is still reportedly exploring new ways to further the franchise. Gero also remains under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios and will continue to develop projects going forward.
The franchise began as a 1994 film written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich and directed by Emmerich. That led to an even more successful TV franchise spanning hundreds of episodes.
This would’ve marked the first TV series in the franchise since “Stargate Universe” concluded in 2011.
