Meta has announced its new generation of VR glasses that it promised to “define a new era for virtual reality”.
Similar to Apple’s Vision Pro but at a more cost-effective price, Meta VR Glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3 – though that’s a cheat.
The device is split in two: the frames, which sit on ears/faces like ordinary glasses, and a pocket-sized device called a “puck,” with the two connected by an optical tether cord.
The VR Glasses handle sensors and display, while the puck contains the processor, battery and storage. The glasses offer a 5K display made of micro OLED panels, 37 pixels per degree, and Dolby Vision enhancements.
Meta VR Glasses will deliver cinema, TV and sports content in one device on ‘theatre-sized’ virtual screens, some with virtual and 3D enhancements dubbed ‘Immersive Cinema’.
Hundreds of movies will be available to rent or buy later this year on Meta Quest, with thousands of titles available by Meta VR Glasses’ launch next spring with quite a few offering 3D films, including ‘first time in 3D’ blockbusters from James Cameron. Yes, 3D films are making a comeback (kind of).
Meta has also teamed up with IMAX to bring the world of full-frame, 1:43:1 IMAX movies to your headset. Meta VR Glasses arrive in Spring 2027 at $1299.
