“Being John Malkovich” and “Her” director Spike Jonze has been named the first ‘artist in residence’ for IMAX Entertainment. As part of the deal, the Oscar-winner will collaborate with IMAX’s leadership to find new partnerships and creative opportunities.
Megan Colligan, president of Imax Entertainment tells Variety: “When Spike and I sat down to talk about this, the ideas just flowed organically. He has a real sense of what’s happening in the culture and he’s been operating on the cutting edge of a lot of different spaces.”
Colligan said she hopes that Jonze is the first of many such artists in residence with the aim of the initiative to find new and innovative ways to use its screens in those periods of the year when blockbusters are a little thin on the ground.
Previously IMAX has experimented with concerts, sporting events, “Game of Thrones,” and recently the Paul Thomas Anderson short film “Anima”.
