The first reactions to two of May’s biggest film titles have gone online. First up, Disney’s “Aladdin” has screened with a few outlets offering social media reactions which are positive overall if often with some hesitancy.
More enthusiastic however are the reactions to Mike Dougherty’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” with the reactions positively glowing – especially about the film’s visuals.
Both however are just early reaction comments, no in-depth reviews at this point, and both from early junket press as opposed to many regular reviewers for sites so their reactions almost always are gushing as opposed to critical. Here’s a sampling of the reactions, first for Aladdin:
“#Aladdin Thoughts: A lavish and enjoyable retelling, but not enough of A Whole New World to fully succeed. Mena Massoud/Naomi Scott are great, while Will Smith brings a fun energy to his take on the Genie, even if the CGI lets him down.” – Digital Spy
“Can confirm that the majority of your concerns about Aladdin, especially anything Will Smith-related, will vanish once that first big song kicks in, but my pick for MVP has got to be Billy Magnussen! He might just be a comedy genius in waiting.” – Joe.ie
“So Aladdin is Disney’s second-best recent remake, after Pete’s Dragon. Proudly a musical fantasy adventure, the jokes are strong, Smith’s Genie is a lot of fun, the human leads work well. It’s 20 minutes too long, but works a charm for the entire run.” – Andrew Jones
“I just watched the new Aladdin movie and it is amazing! It was so good that I forgot my roza had opened. Also if Sanjay Leela Bhansali ever made a Disney film, it would be this! I felt like I was watching a cross between Ram Leela/Bajirao Mastani but without people dying.” – BBC
And now here’s a sampling for “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”:
“#GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters ups the monster action considerably. The battle scenes are gorgeous & fierce & feel ripped from the pages of a gnarly graphic novel. You want a giant-monster movie throwdown, this is it and then some. Can’t wait for that Godzilla vs Kong movie now.” – Erik Davis, CinemaBlend
“#GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters is the modern day Godzilla movie you’ve been waiting for. It’s everything the 2014 Godzilla isn’t, while still retaining the best elements of that film and elevating them x 100. Monstrous action that rattles the theater. So damn good. @GodzillaMovie.” – Paul Shirley, Joblo
“#GodzillaMovie is the film I’ve waited years for. The thrilling sequel captures the spirit of Japan’s famous kaiju while setting up his reign for years to come. There are few words which describe the film as well as momentous, and its epic scale will leave audiences of astounded. Honestly, #GodzillaMovie is (atomically) breathtaking. If you aren’t with the MosterVerse and its kaiju revolution, this film will change your mind.” – Megan Peters, ComicBook.com
“Am now free to say #GodzillaMovie King of the Monsters is handily the craziest, most entertaining American kaiju movie in existence. But that doesn’t do justice to just how wild a ride this is, jumping from the majesty of the monsters to the wackiness of the humans.” – David Crow, Den of Geek
“Aladdin” opens May 24th while the new “Godzilla” opens a week later on May 31st. Tickets are now on sale for both.
