A Morgan Stanley analyst has projected that Disney could have more than 130 million subscribers across its various online video services worldwide by 2024.
Swinburne expects Disney to sign up a further 13 million subscribers by the end of 2020, giving it a total of 50 million subscribers across Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Plus at that time.
Combined with projections for a faster-than-expected international rollout of the Disney+ service after its November launch this year, it’s expected Disney+ will gain a minimum of 60-90 million additional subscribers in five years, suggesting it will reach profitability within that time period.
The analyst however warns the studio not to get complacent: “Disney is not a tech company in its DNA, nor does it have a long history as a direct-to-consumer digital retailer.”
