Lizzy Caplan is set to play Annie Wilkes, the nurse from Stephen King’s “Misery” whom Kathy Bates played in the 1990s film, for the upcoming second season of Hulu’s “Castle Rock”. Garrett Hedlund, Tim Robbins, Elsie Fisher, Barkhad Abdi, Yusra Warsama and Matthew Alan have also joined the cast.
The self-contained second season of the series will explore a feud between warring clans that comes to a boil when budding psychopath Annie gets waylaid in Castle Rock.
On one side of the war is the crime family the Merrils led by Reginald ‘Pop’ Merrill (Robbins) who is dying of cancer. Hedlund plays John ‘Ace’ Merill, the town’s legendary bully who is taking over his uncle’s business and threatens the fragile peace with nearby Jerusalem’s Lot. Alan will portray Chris Merrill, Ace’s brother who struggles to keep the peace.
Warsama is Dr. Nadia Omar, a Harvard-trained Somali medical director of a rural hospital in Jerusalem’s Lot whose rational and scientific mind will be put to the test. Abdi is Abdi Omar, Nadia’s tough older brother who leads the charge to build a Somali community center that will deepen the roots of his people in Maine. Fisher will play Joy, Annie’s homeschooled teenage daughter concerned over her mom’s sanity.
Hedlund’s role was previously brought to the screen in “Stand By Me” played by Kiefer Sutherland. It’s unclear if any of the first season cast members could return for the second season, which will feature a new storyline as showrunners Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw plan to tell a new and complete story every cycle.
A premiere date for season two of Castle Rock has not yet been announced.
