Director Edward Zwick (“Defiance,” “Blood Diamond”) has set “In the Heart of the Sea” at New Regency as his next film says Variety.
Based on Nathaniel Philbrick fact-based book, it follows the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex, which was stalked and ultimately destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820.
Stranded thousands of miles from home, the crew struggled to survive; they were lost at sea for 90 days. Eight were rescued. The incident was the inspiration for Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.”
Zwick co-wrote the script with Marshall Herskovitz and will produce with Paula Weinstein. Production aims to kick off later this year with Fox distributing the film in 2010.
