Bilbo has bagged a billion.
Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” has raked in just over $1 billion at the global box office.
The number was boosted by an excellent debut in China, where it managed $37 million in its first 10 days. All up, the box-office split is 30% U.S. domestic/70% international territories.
The film is presently the second highest-earning worldwide title in the series after “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”.
It’s also the fourth highest grossing film of 2012 behind “Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Skyfall” and “The Dark Knight Rises”.
The news comes as another big-budget fantasy tentpole, “Jack the Giant Slayer,” opened to a fairly dismal $27 million in the United States.
