“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” director Destin Daniel Cretton has signed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures.
Under the new deal, Cretton will develop films to produce through his production company, Hisako Films. The pact does not cover directing.
Sony is naturally very keen to get Cretton back in the director’s chair for another Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” film as ‘Brand New Day’ has scored both critical acclaim and set box-office records – grossing more than $2.452 billion worldwide.
It won’t be for a little while yet, as Cretton has to shoot the live-action “Naruto” film for Lionsgate early next year. Sanford Panitch, Sony Pictures’ motion picture group president, says in a statement:
“Destin is a very special human, a deeply thoughtful visionary mind, a brilliant filmmaker in its truest sense and a marvellous storyteller who is a master at understanding the cinematic experience. We at Sony are proud to be making a future together and expanding our relationship with Destin, Jeyun and Hisako Films.”
Cretton’s other films include “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Just Mercy” and “Short Term 12,” along with creating and directing some of Marvel’s “Wonder Man” TV series.
