One question about Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” home video release appears to have been answered.
Blu-ray.com has posted a page for the title indicating that the movie will have a 1.78:1 aspect ratio when it comes to disc – meaning it will fill a standard 16×9 TV screen fully.
That has been par for the course with almost all films shot with IMAX elements, the IMAX scenes reduced from their 1.43:1 original aspect ratio to a 1.78:1 version on home video – just very slightly chopping off the top and bottom of the image.
This has stirred talk about whether the disc release of the film, the first major studio movie to be entirely shot in IMAX, should include a 1.43:1 version as well – preserving the movie’s original aspect ratio.
One film that notably included the original 1.43:1 IMAX ratio for select sequences and then switched back to 2.39:1 when it didn’t, was the home video release of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” – the harsh shifts drawing complaints upon release.
Nolan famously filmed “The Odyssey” with multiple aspect ratios in mind for the film’s release from 1.43:1 all the way down to 2.39:1 in some conventional cinemas. Further details about “The Odyssey” home video release are expected to be revealed in October ahead of a release in November.
