Box-office numbers for Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” have come in with the film estimated to be pulling in $355 million for its domestic opening weekend.
That puts it just $2.1 million shy of the biggest domestic opening weekend record holder, “Avengers: Endgame” at $357.1 million, though final Sunday numbers will tell the tale.
Either way, the film has racked up a far bigger opening than “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did with $260.1 million in 2021, with tracking service EntTelligence indicating 24.1 million moviegoers attended the film.
Meanwhile overseas, the film pulled in a further $572 million, bringing its worldwide box-office opening weekend to $927 million – the second highest of all time behind only…”Avengers: Endgame” at $1.2 billion but well ahead of “Avengers: Infinity War” at $640 million and the previous entry “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $601 million.
Sony Motion Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman says in a statement:
“This weekend’s historic worldwide results remind me of what Clarence wrote to George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful life: ‘Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day is fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives, and that is resonate to audiences of all ages and all around the world. In troubled times, Sony is very proud to have united the world in celebrating a film about hope.”
The film marks the biggest opening for Zendaya, Jon Bernthal and director Destin Daniel Cretton, while PLFs accounted for 24% of the weekend total.
The movie didn’t snag IMAX screens; that was “The Odyssey” which is looking to have a $51 million third weekend and is now just shy of $400 million domestically and over $911 million worldwide. Estimates for the ultimate box-office total of Nolan’s film have now been raised to $1.4 billion.
