Out promoting the premiere of his new FX series “The Shards,” producer Ryan Murphy has said he’s open to the idea of making a follow-up to his musical series “Glee”.
Murphy co-created the jukebox musical comedy-drama series with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Airing on Fox, the show kicked off in 2009 and followed the members of the glee club, New Directions, as they navigated social issues like sexuality, family, and race.
Over 120 episodes were produced through until 2015, the series boosting the careers of some of its stars like Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Cory Monteith, Chord Overstreet, Harry Shum Jr. and Jayma Mays.
Speaking with People, Murphy says in the decade-plus since it finished, younger generations are discovering it:
“That show is interesting because it’s come back around. So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show’. My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.’ So yeah, I love that show, and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people.”
Whether such a show would work again remains in question, not to mention the series famously was expensive and time-consuming to produce due to all its musical numbers.
Murphy himself has seen his star rise and fall a bit in the years since with breakout successes like the early seasons of “Monster” and “American Crime Story” but also some notable misfires like “All’s Fair,” “Halston,” and “The Politician”.
