Aussies Face ID Checks To Play GTA VI

Rockstar Games

Australian gamers keen to try Rockstar Games’ “Grand Theft Auto VI” may have to hand over their IDs to do so.

News.com.au (via Dexerto) reports that due to the country’s controversial online safety laws, which came into play in March, local users “will require to show mandatory age verification to play the game”.

As “Grand Theft Auto VI” is rated R18+ in Australia, the new laws add additional hoops – namely, any content classified as R18+ must verify that its users are adults.

To do so, Rockstar may be required to verify its users are adults via real-world photo IDs and drivers licenses.

Rockstar could also face major consequences for non-compliance, such as civil penalties of up to $49.5 million per breach.

“Grand Theft Auto VI” isn’t slated to launch with an online mode, but the current iteration of GTA Online in Australia already requires users to pass an ID check. That system is expected to carry over to GTA6.

The game itself is set to launch on November 19th 2026.
