Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in the “Harry Potter” TV series for HBO.
The character, a cheeky ghost who causes trouble in the Hogwarts halls, is a fan-favourite and famously didn’t appear in any of the original films.
The late legendary UK comedian Rik Mayall was cast as Peeves and shot his scenes for the first “Harry Potter” film, but director Chris Columbus ended up cutting his scenes out.
Serafinowicz most recently appeared in last year’s live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon” and has long provided his voice to films like “Sing” and “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” where he voiced Darth Maul.
HBO is planning a seven-season adaptation of the books, each season set to tackle one novel in J.K. Rowling’s series. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry alongside Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout stepping into the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
John Lithgow plays headmaster Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Snape and Nick Frost is Rubeus Hagrid. The show is set to launch this December exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.
