Starz has officially cancelled the gladiator drama “Spartacus: House of Ashur” after just one season.
The series, which hails from original “Spartacus” creator Steven S. Knight, is produced by Lionsgate Television, which is now going to shop it around to other platforms.
‘House of Ashur’ was picked up by Starz in 2023, prior to its separation from Lionsgate. Since the split, ‘Ashur’ is no longer owned by the network.
According to Deadline, neither reviews nor viewership for the series reportedly came close to the original series. In addition, the audience for it, predominantly white males, clashed with the network’s focus on women and underrepresented audiences.
The Spartacus sequel could not match the buzz and viewership levels of the original 2010 series. Additionally, the makeup of the follow-up’s audience did not quite align with Starz’s focus on women and underrepresented audiences, sources said.
The series was set in an alternate timeline where Nick Tarabay’s Ashur character lived and took control of the gladiator school. Graham McTavish, Jordi Webbe, Ivana Baquero, Claudia Black and India Shaw-Smith were among the co-stars.
