“Avengers” Director On Over Policing Of Spoilers

Marvel

Joe Russo, one of the co-directors of “Avengers: Doomsday,” is someone who is well aware of the concern about movie spoilers online but says spoiler culture can “become a little over-policed”.

Russo and his brother Anthony return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the upcoming two “Avengers” films filmed back-to-back.

So far, the production has gone relatively smoothly, and while talk about the film has remained high with new rumours about the story and characters swirling every other day (some of which has been subsequently confirmed), a lot of it still feels highly speculative at best.

In an interview with Metro, Russo was asked about his thoughts on spoilers and how filmmakers – himself included – go to great lengths to preserve a film’s secrets. He says that’s with good reason, but maybe some fans are being too cautious and shouldn’t worry about the various things they’ve heard so far:

“On one hand, audiences want to be surprised, and that’s part of what makes the theatrical experience exciting. On the other hand, it can become a little over-policed, where people are anxious about engaging with anything.

We design these films to unfold in a certain way, and we want audiences to feel those moments as intended. But at the same time, you can’t control everything. You have to focus on making something that holds up beyond the initial surprise.”

Chief Creative Officer of Russo’s AGBO production company Angela Russo-Otstot adds that: “There’s some serious lockdown at our company. And it’s a very limited group that are across the different things that Anthony and Joe are aware of. We may think we know things and we’re wrong!”

“Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18th.
