“Hamilton” and “In the Heights” stage musical creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced his next directorial effort – a film adaptation of the 2019 Off-Broadway musical “Octet”.
Announcing the news this morning on Instagram, Miranda confirmed he’ll helm the a cappella musical about the dangers of internet addiction.
Playwright and composer Dave Malloy created the original work which is set in a church basement and follows eight internet addicts in a support group who share their struggles.
Malloy will write the screenplay and serve as an executive producer. Rumors have swirled that Rachel Zegler may have a role, but that’s not confirmed at this time. In his post, Miranda says:
“I’ve been obsessed since I saw Annie Tippe’s production in November 2019, and working on adapting this with Dave for the past six years. Now we get to make the movie.”
Julie Oh, John Skidmore and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. will produce. This will mark Miranda’s second directorial adaptation of a stage work, the other being 2021’s “Tick, Tick… Boom!”, which landed its star, Andrew Garfield, an Oscar nomination.
