“Doctor Who” Struggling To Find New Star?

BBC, Disney+

A new report in the British tabloids suggests that finding someone to play the next incarnation of The Doctor in “Doctor Who” is proving a bit difficult.

As we know, a new “Doctor Who” Christmas special is in the works at the BBC – one that will continue on from the fifteenth season finale in May, in which Ncuti Gatwa’s The Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, who played former companion Rose Tyler.

The Sun is reporting that Tyler, currently working on the third season of “Wednesday,” will not be the new incumbent Doctor. The hunt is now on for who will potentially take over full-time.

Their source claims that network bosses have been putting feelers out in the industry for an actor who could play the role. But they’ve hit a snag:

“Despite once being one of TV’s most coveted roles, it’s now seen as a bit of a poisoned chalice. Plus, anyone taking on the job will want to know if it’s going to be a one-off festive special or go beyond that as they will want to plan their workload over coming years.”

So far, nothing has been confirmed regarding the series’ future beyond the Christmas special. Gatwa’s final episode marked the end of the BBC’s multi-million dollar deal with Disney+, which was made in the hopes of turning the series into a global brand.

That didn’t pay off with the series racking up various complaints about its creative direction. The series is now fully back in the hands of the BBC.
