Netflix has announced that it has renewed its upcoming reboot of “Little House on the Prairie,” the order coming through ahead of the show’s launch, which has also just been announced for July 9th. A first-look photo has also been released.
The original series centred on a family that lived on a farm in Minnesota in the 1870s–90s, depicting life in a small agrarian community during those hard times.
Rebecca Sonnenshine (“The Boys,” “Vampire Diaries”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series dubbed a ‘reimagining’ of the original 1930s book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios are producing the new version, which follows Charles, his wife Caroline and their daughters Laura and Mary as they leave Wisconsin to settle in Independence, Kansas. There will also be Osage characters.
The cast includes Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Mary, Luke Bracey as Pa, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Ma.
Netflix’s Jinny Howe says in a statement: “The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
The books have sold over 73 million copies to date, while the original NBC series aired for nine seasons and 204 episodes between 1974 and 1982. That series remains popular, the show garnering 13.25 billion viewing minutes on Peacock last year – which made it one of the most-streamed library titles in 2024.
The Ingalls family are on their way. Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9 and the series has been officially renewed for Season 2!
