Rakia Media has acquired the screen rights to Ad Populum’s Chia Pet brand.

Film writer and producer Adam Jay Epstein and producers Ari Daniel Pinchot and Jonathan Rubenstein are behind that holding company and the production company Crystal City Entertainment.

With the acquisition, the trio are said to be laying out the vision for an animated film or TV series, reports Variety.

Debuting nearly 50 years ago, Chia Pets briefly became a cultural sensation and were essentially terracotta figures of animals that held dirt with chia sprouts that would resemble hair or fur when they grew.

Over 30 million units have been sold. Epstein says in a statement: “Chia Pets have been featured on our shelves since childhood, and we’re thrilled to help grow the brand to new heights. We can’t wait for audiences to check out the world of Chia in theaters and screens across the world.”

Rakia Media also recently acquired the “Backyard Sports” gaming franchise.
