“Blue Beetle” Pair Stir Some Sequel Talk

Warner Bros. Pictures

DC Studios chief James Gunn has previously hinted that Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle could be one of the elements from the prior DCEU to make the jump to the current DC Universe, despite the film’s overall soft box office.

However, there’s been no real concrete confirmation about anything just yet. Recently, two of those involved in the film have now commented on the franchise’s future, with both indicating something is happening regarding a potential sequel.

First up, there’s actress Belissa Escobedo, who plays the character’s young sister, Milagro Reyes. Speaking during the promotion of NBC’s “Happy Place,” she seems to indicate a follow-up is happening. She tells Comic Book Resources:

“Oh, absolutely. That’s totally in the works and in talks. So hopefully that’s happening soon. I’m gonna see Xolo [Mariduena] soon. We’re going to do a Comic-Con together.”

Meanwhile, the original film’s director Angel Manuel Soto tells The Direct:

“Yeah, there have been conversations, and that’s all I can say. I mean, that’s fair. Conversations have been happening, and there’s definitely… James [Gunn] has been very vocal about keeping Blue Beetle in the DCU. So good things are coming for Jaime Reyes and his family.”

In mid-2024, word came that an animated series was in development, with Miguel Puga (“The Casagrandes”) as showrunner, Cristian Martinez as writer, and both Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer as producers.
