“Battle Angel Alita” and “Avatar” were projects James Cameron was attached to for many years before they finally made their way to screens.
Another title on that list of long-gestating passion projects is “Fantastic Voyage,” a remake of the 1966 sci-fi cult classic starring Raquel Welch.
Cameron has been attached to the remake since the late 1990s in a producing capacity. The likes of Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass, Roland Emmerich, and Shawn Levy have all come close to directing at some point.
“Batman Begins” scribe David S. Goyer was also linked to the Cameron/del Toro version, which Goyer previously revealed got derailed by Fox.
Speaking with Deadline this week, Cameron offered a brief update saying:
“I’ve been nurturing that for a while. I hope to get that going this coming year. I’ll be producing it. I’m working with a director right now with a new script. So, yeah, we’re gonna do it.”
The original film revolves around a scientist who holds the secret of miniaturisation technology. After he goes comatose, a team of specialists is shrunk and travel inside his body to try to repair a dangerous blood clot.
Richard Fleischer helmed the original, which also starred Stephen Boyd, Edmond O’Brien, Donald Pleasence, and Arthur Kennedy.
