Rian Johnson’s proposed “Star Wars” trilogy is dead, it seems.
The “Knives Out” franchise director, who previously directed 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” has given a new interview with THR with the trade saying “that plan is effectively dead”.
They add that Johnson isn’t saying goodbye yet, with the filmmaker saying: “A part of my brain will always be in ‘Star Wars’. It’s so much a part of me and the way I think.”
Johnson has previously said he was open to working with Lucasfilm at some point in the future, but there have been no developments on that front. He’s currently busy prepping his own original sci-fi feature.
The next “Star Wars” movie to hit cinemas will be Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” opening on May 22nd 2026. That film, though ostensibly a standalone feature, is being seen as essentially the fourth season of “The Mandalorian” series.
Speaking with Empire, Favreau himself disagrees with that assessment – indicating a fourth season has already been written:
“We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have season 4 sitting on my desk here.”
Favreau hasn’t indicated if he plans to bring back “The Mandalorian” for a fourth season after the film. If he does, it likely wouldn’t hit until late 2027 or 2028 at the earliest.
