“Alien: Earth” scene stealer Babou Ceesay and “Scream” queen Neve Campbell are among the seven new faces set to join the second season of Joe Barton spy thriller “Black Doves” at Netflix.
Also joining the fray are Sam Riley (“Firebrand”), Sylvia Hoeks (“Blade Runner 2049”), Samuel Barnett (“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”), Goran Kostic (“Ant-Man and the Wasp”) and Ambika Mod (“One Day”).
Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, and Sarah Lancashire will all reprise their roles from the first season of the acclaimed and darkly comedic espionage drama in which Knightley’s Helen is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves: the Black Doves.
But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband, Wallace, preparing to become Prime Minister, she is walking a more treacherous line than ever.
Helen’s enigmatic handler, Mrs. Reed (Lancashire) is ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves, while once high-end triggerman Sam (Whishaw) is now reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits.
As Helen and Sam search for answers, loyalties are weaponised, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything.
Helen and Sam’s mission leads them back to old friends and enemies, through the dark decisions and painful sacrifices of their pasts, and right to the heart of the Black Doves.
Returnees include Andrew Buchan as Wallace Webb, Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, Ella Lily Hyland as Williams, Gabrielle Creevy Eleanor, Agnes O’Casey as Dani, and Molly Chesworth as Marie. One surprise absentee from the list is Omari Douglas as Sam’s ex-boyfriend, Michael.
Filming on the second season is now underway in London. Barton says in a statement:
“I couldn’t be more excited to delve back into the world of our murderous little spy family. To have so many of our amazing cast returning and also being able to add some of my absolute favourite actors into the mix is such a great joy. Downing Street will never be the same again…”
The series is written, created, and executive-produced by Barton. Knightley, Jane Featherstone, and Chris Fry executive produce.
