“Uncharted” Director Unsure Of Sequel Status

Sony Pictures

Back in early 2022, just months after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” became the first truly big post-pandemic box-office juggernaut, actor Tom Holland found himself atop the box office again with the film adaptation of Naughty Dog’s “Uncharted” video game series.

In the film, Nathan Drake (Holland) is recruited by Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) in a race against corrupt billionaire Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and mercenary leader Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) to locate the fabled treasure of the Magellan expedition.

The movie received only mixed/poor reviews from critics, but ended up a commercial success – grossing $407.1 million worldwide from a $120 million budget – about on par with the second “Sonic the Hedgehog” film and “Detective Pikachu”.

It was good enough that Sony indicated it was looking into a sequel, with actor Mark Wahlberg revealing in late 2023 that a script was being written. Since then, however, there’s been no real update.

The first film’s director, Ruben Fleischer, previously expressed a desire to do a sequel. He tells The Playlist this week that he’s mostly out of the loop in regards to the film: “I’m not quite sure what the latest is on that. I haven’t been very participatory in it.”

Fleischer is currently out promoting his work on the upcoming “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” and says he’s still developing his long-gestating vampire western “The Sun Always Sets in the West,” which he describes as essentially “Unforgiven if the lead character was a vampire”. That film is waiting for a new script draft to come.
