While plenty of people enjoy both, there are some fans who are Team “Star Wars” and some who are Team “Star Trek,” and never the twain shall meet.
One person firmly on the Team “Star Wars” side is Golden Globe winner John Boyega who, of course, starred in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy and infamously has been quite vocal about his issues with how things went down working on that.
During an appearance at the recent Dragon Con (via The Pop Verse), Boyega says that while he doesn’t really see himself starring in a “Star Trek” project, there’s one thing that franchise does that he admires:
“I’m an old school Star Wars fan, and if you’re a Trekkie and you’ve met me at the booths, you would find that I would mention that I don’t like Star Trek. I just think that on the Trekkie side, they like to talk about it. On the Star Wars side, we just get active. With Star Wars, you’ve got to talk while the war is going on. In Star Trek, they give you time to have discussions. I think there’s something Star Wars can learn from that, actually. In terms of me appearing in [Star Trek], I’ve got to stay on team. I’m a lightsaber guy.”
Two of Boyega’s “Star Wars” films were directed by J.J. Abrams, the filmmaker who has also directed two “Star Trek” films – films that somewhat divided the “Star Trek” fanbase for being more akin to “Star Wars” than “Star Trek” with a bigger emphasis on action, VFX and straightforward good vs. bad dynamics. Abrams’ approach subsequently rubbed off somewhat on the Paramount+ era “Star Trek” shows and films.
On the flipside, the “Star Wars” fandom is also divided and has actually become more “Star Trek”-esque in nature, with its bigger focus on television rather than films (though that will soon change). Additionally, the most well-received “Star Wars” of recent years – “Andor” – feels more “Star Trek” in nature with its emphasis on talking, politics, allegories and moral quandaries.
Rumours have swirled that Boyega may return to the Finn role for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film, which will focus on Daisy Ridley’s Rey a full fifteen years after the events of “Rise of Skywalker”.
