Austin Butler Up For New “Miami Vice”

Sony Pictures

Austin Butler is in talks to play the co-lead role of James ‘Sonny’ Crockett in “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski’s new film adaptation of iconic 1980s NBC series “Miami Vice” at Universal Pictures.

The “Dune” and “Caught Stealing” star will take on the role originated by Don Johnson in the original series and played by Colin Farrell in the 2006 film.

The casting follows confirmation earlier this week that “Sinners” and “Creed” star Michael B. Jordan is in talks to portray his on-screen partner, undercover detective Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs. Philip Michael Thomas and Jamie Foxx previously played the role.

Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer penned the script for the film that will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami as it follows the two detectives who worked undercover.

The project is said to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series, which Michael Mann produced and was hugely influential on the TV and cultural landscape.

Universal has scheduled the film for cinema release on August 6th 2027 with filming to get underway next year.
