After a few misfires this year, Blumhouse has returned to form it seems with their “Black Phone 2” topping the box-office this weekend.
The supernatural horror sequel is tracking for a $24.4 million domestic opening weekend – charting slightly ahead of its predecessor. With a production budget of just $30 million, the film is looking likely to be quite profitable for Universal.
Critics reviews are only slightly less than the first film, while the overall ‘B’ CinemaScore is considered very good for a horror film which notoriously chart low.
The other main newcomer this weekend is the Keanu Reeves-led “Good Fortune” which isn’t faring so well, coming in third with a three day just under $6 million at present.
Disney’s “TRON: Ares” is floundering, the title looking set to drop 65% in its second weekend with a second place $11 million haul for the three-day. The Channing Tatum-led “Roofman” also isn’t faring much better, falling 55% in its second weekend to fifth place with $3.65 million.
Faith based WW2-set title “Truth & Treason” opened in ssicth place with $2.5 million, while Luca Guadagnino’s university sexual politics thriller “After the Hunt” expanded wide but hasn’t caught on – taking in just $1.6 million and pulling in both poor reviews and a woeful C- CinemaScore.
