It’s official, a third film in the current film iteration of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise is in the works at Warner Bros. Pictures.
No further details about the third entry have been revealed, beyond Jeremy Slater being eyed to return as screenwriter and Todd Garner again producing. The news was announced as part of the film’s panel at New York Comic Con.
The film was originally slated to open this month, but Warner Bros. Pictures pushed it back half a year to May 15th 2026, the studio lining the film up as a major summer blockbuster following the first trailer racking up 107 million global views within 24 hours – an all-time record for a red-band trailer.
Speaking on the panel, director Simon McQuoid discussed the delay: “We’re a victim of our own success. We created a massive summer blockbuster. The franchise itself is gonna kick off next year and it’s gonna be worth the wait.”
In terms of his goal for the second film, McQuoid said:
“The goal was after the first one came out to really make Mortal Kombat 2 feel like a full feature length version of the first opening scenes from Mortal Kombat 1. There’s so much to work with, we are raising the stakes to a greater scale. Much more emotion with these characters. I wanted us to take a journey throughout all these realms. And to see that and let it rip to have this massive spectacle is truly incredible.”
