Universal Pictures put tickets on sale for “Wicked: For Good” this week, and the results are pretty jaw-dropping.
Both GlobalBoxOffice and Fandango are reporting that the title had the best first-day ticket pre-sales of any film this year – surpassing the likes of “Superman” and “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle”.
In fact, the title ranks among Fandango’s top 10 best all-time first-day ticket pre-sellers like “Star Wars: Force Awakens,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
It’s also the best PG-rated first-day ticket pre-seller of all time on the platform – beating “The Lion King” and “K-Pop Demon Hunters: Sing-Along Event”.
As compared to last year’s “Wicked,” ‘For Good’ tripled its first day pre-sales figures. The film is helped by this time have nothing much in the way of competition (last year it had “Gladiator II” hogging IMAX screens).
The first half of “Wicked” premiered in November last year and pulled in the best opening ever for a Broadway musical film with $112.5 million domestically. The movie ultimately went on to gross $756.4 million worldwide.
Estimates are “Wicked: For Good” will open higher, potentially a further $20-35 million higher, but it’s still a little early to tell as yet. The film will benefit from having multiple early screenings including Wednesday and Thursday previews, Amazon Early Access screenings, and a more consistent global release.
