FOX has announced plans for a reboot of “Baywatch”.
The broadcaster has handed out a straight-to-series order for twelve episodes of the new take on the iconic 1990s syndicated series about California lifeguards that ran for eleven seasons and made Pamela Anderson a household name.
In addition, “Burn Notice” and “The Gifted” creator Matt Nix has been set as showrunner and will direct.
An official synopsis for the new version reads: “Baywatch will feature adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original – now with an entirely new cast donning the show’s signature red swimsuits, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.”
Though there was a slightly campy tone, the original series played its drama straight and was targeted at family audiences. The 2017 R-rated film adaptation, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, tried for a more comedic bent and was widely panned.
An exact premiere date has yet to be set, but the network is reportedly aiming for a debut during the 2026-2027 season. Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Dante Di Loreto, and Doug Schwartz are also executive producing.
