Series Teaser: “Last Samurai Standing”

Netflix

Netflix has premiered the trailer for its upcoming Japan-set battle royale series “Last Samurai Standing,” based on the manga series and Shogo Imamura-penned novel “Ikusagami,” the series launches on the service on November 13th.

The series takes place in late 19th century Japan during the Meiji period. 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), gather at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize which Saga will use to help his sick wife and child.

Each of the warriors is given a wooden tag and join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money of ¥100 billion.

Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsty warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival.

Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Hiroshi Tamaki, Hideaki Itō and Gaku Hamada co-star in the series which the production team dubbed the equivalent of producing three feature films. The production boasts nearly 300 actors, each requiring their own distinct costume. Michihito Fujii directs the entire run, while Okada has multiple behind-the-scenes roles along with the series lead role.

The first two episodes of the series will premiere at the 30th Busan International Film Festival on September 18th before the Netflix release in November.
