First Photos: “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple”

Ahead of the film’s first trailer expected to drop tomorrow, Rolling Stone has done a feature piece offering new details and first look photos from Nia DaCosta’s “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple”.

The sequel to Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” from this Summer, shooting on the film began literally three weeks after the previous film wrapped its shoot with DaCosta telling the outlet the movie “keeps the same unique, off-the-wall, surprising energy” as Boyle film, even as she set out to make the sequel very much her own as opposed to try and ‘copy’ Boyle’s style.

The story begins shortly after the events of “28 Years Later” with Spike (Alfie Williams) encountering Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) and his gang of blond-haired, velour-suited ‘Jimmies’.

Spike is forced to join Jimmy’s violent cult, which is on a collision course with Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) and his vicious Alpha virus-carrier Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry).

O’Connell calls Jimmy “extremely dark and twisted” and what he was searching for when playing him was “twisted gaiety.” Shot entirely on location, the film also expands the world and showcases more of what happened to the countryside.

The film is again being penned by Alex Garland, while Boyle is producing, and actor Cillian Murphy is executive producing. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” opens in cinemas on January 16th 2026.
