Amazon Sets YA “Wizard Of Oz” Series

Amazon Prime Video has begun development of “Dorothy,” a new young adult take on L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz” books.

Gina Matthews (“13 Going on 30,” “Popular”) created and will produce the contemporary, music-infused series which “uses the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the challenges and choices facing young adults today”.

Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, Lee Metzger, Grant Scharbo and Patrick Moran executive produce.

Matthews says in a statement: “I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child. The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”

The Wizard of Oz has been adapted as a property many times over the years, from the legendary 1939 film, the sinister 1980s “Return to Oz,” to more recent works like “Oz the Great and Powerful” and the “Wicked” musical films.

There have been several TV versions as well, including a famed 1980s anime series narrated by Margot Kidder.
