“Gears of War” Film Still Being Written

The Coalition

A brief update has emerged in regards to the anticipated film adaptation of the “Gears of War” video game franchise from developer The Coalition.

The game series began in 2006 with a remaster coming to PS5 for the first time next week and a new mainline installment arriving in 2026.

Talk of a film has been swirling for many years. Then, in 2022, Netflix picked up the screen rights to the franchise. At last report back in May this year, David Leitch (“The Fall Guy”) was set to direct the project.

Speaking with THR this week Leitch and his wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick were asked how far along the film is. She replied:

“We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts (“Dune,” “Prometheus”), and we’re really excited about it. There’s a lot of energy from [Gears of War company] The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game. It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP in his own way.”

No further details are currently available, and no casting has yet been announced, even as Dave Bautista has long championed playing the lead role.
