Boyega Talks His Early “Star Wars” Expectations

In the wake of the release of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019, actor John Boyega has given interviews about his time with the “Star Wars” franchise and the misgivings he had.

Part of that stemmed from the obvious sidelining of his character Finn. Effectively, the male lead alongside Daisy Ridley’s Rey in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” his character was reduced to a supporting role in the subsequent two films.

Part of that seemed to stem from the lack of a real plan for the sequel trilogy, which saw three films with quite different storytelling goals and tone.

During an appearance at Fan Expo Boston (via Screen Rant) last weekend, Boyega revealed that one potential reason for his frustration was the different expectations for his arc than what made it to the screen.

“I think I assumed he was Force-sensitive from ‘The Force Awakens’ script or at least by the time I got to the end of ‘The Force Awakens’ script. I thought they were planning dual Jedis. I actually thought that they would Obi-Wan and Darth Vader us a bit. That we would turn against each other or something along those lines.”

Despite his criticisms, Boyega has reaffirmed in recent years that he remains a “massive, massive” fan of “Star Wars”. The actor has multiple films in post-production right now including “The Freshening,” “Otis & Zelma” and a sequel to the first film he starred in – 2011’s “Attack the Block”.
